How to Roll a Pension Lump Sum Into an IRA, Step by Step
5 min read · Updated 2026-08-26
A direct rollover moves your entire lump sum into an IRA with no tax withheld and nothing taxable this year. The process is five steps and mostly paperwork, but two details, the payee line on the check and the 60-day rule, separate a clean rollover from an expensive mistake.
The five steps
- Open the receiving IRA first. Any major brokerage works. A traditional IRA preserves the tax deferral; choosing Roth here is a full conversion and a big tax bill, so default to traditional unless you have planned otherwise.
- Elect direct rollover on the plan's election form. You will provide the custodian name and account number. Married participants will typically need notarized spousal consent.
- Check the payee. The check must be payable to the custodian for your benefit, for example "Custodian FBO Your Name IRA," not to you personally. Payable-to-you triggers 20 percent withholding even if you intend to roll it over.
- Deposit and invest. If the check is mailed to you but payable to the custodian, forward it promptly. Then remember the money is uninvested cash until you choose investments.
- Verify the paperwork in January. You will receive a Form 1099-R. A clean direct rollover is reported as non-taxable. Keep the election confirmation with your records.
If the check was made out to you anyway
You have 60 days from receipt to complete a rollover. The plan withheld 20 percent, so to roll over the full amount you must add the withheld portion from other savings, then recover the withholding when you file your return. Missing the 60-day window makes the distribution taxable, plus a possible 10 percent penalty if you are under 59 and a half. This is why the direct rollover election exists: it makes the trap impossible.
Decisions that can wait until after the rollover
- Investment selection. Rolling to cash inside the IRA is fine on day one. Deciding the portfolio can take a calm month.
- Partial annuitization. You can later use part of the IRA to buy a lifetime income annuity if you miss the pension-like floor.
- Roth conversions. Converting measured slices in low-income years is a multi-year planning tool, not a day-one decision.
- Advisor selection. If you want help, interview fee-only fiduciaries. Never let an advisor's urgency set your rollover timeline. If you want a starting point, tell us about your situation.
Frequently asked questions
How do I roll over a pension lump sum without paying taxes?
Elect a direct rollover to a traditional IRA on the plan's election form, with the check payable to the IRA custodian for your benefit. No withholding applies and nothing is taxable in the year of the rollover.
How long does a pension rollover take?
Plans typically issue payment within a few weeks after the election window closes. The rollover itself is complete when the custodian deposits the check into your IRA.
Can I roll a pension into my current employer's 401(k)?
Often yes, if the receiving plan accepts roll-ins. An IRA usually offers more investment choice and lower costs, but a 401(k) roll-in can preserve the age-55 separation penalty exception and simplify accounts.
