How We Work
Editorial standards and fact-checking
People make one-time, irreversible decisions based on what they read here. That raises the bar for how we source and check every claim. This is the standard we hold ourselves to.
Primary sources only
Facts on this site are grounded in primary sources: IRS publications and rate tables, PBGC data, Department of Labor guidance, company SEC filings and press releases, and established industry research such as LIMRA's pension risk transfer surveys. Every guide that states a figure carries an article sources list, and every company history cites the filings and reporting behind it.
No hallucinated facts
We do not publish a statistic, a dollar figure, a date, or a company claim we cannot tie to a verifiable source. Where a number is an estimate or a typical range rather than a hard figure, we say so in plain language rather than implying false precision.
We have nothing to sell you
Pension Buyouts does not sell annuities, insurance, investments, or managed accounts. We are not a registered investment adviser or an insurance producer. That independence is the entire point: the two voices most retirees hear, the employer making the offer and the advisor who wants the rollover, both have a financial interest in the outcome. We do not. When we connect a reader with independent professional help through our get-help form, we may be compensated for that introduction, and we disclose it plainly.
Educational, not individualized advice
Everything here is educational information, not financial, tax, or legal advice, and none of it is tailored to your personal circumstances. Our tools, including the calculator, produce simplified estimates that deliberately leave out taxes, fees, and plan-specific provisions. For a decision this consequential, confirm the facts with your plan administrator and consult a qualified professional. See our full disclaimer.
Review and updates
Content is reviewed against its sources on a recurring basis, and the “updated” date on each article reflects the last substantive review. Market figures, such as annual pension risk transfer volume, are refreshed as new LIMRA and PBGC data is published.
Corrections
We correct errors promptly and transparently. If you spot something wrong, especially in a company history, tell us and we will verify and fix it.
