IBM pension buyout history
IBM transferred $16 billion of pension obligations to Prudential and MetLife in 2022 and another $6 billion to Prudential in 2024. What it means for IBM retirees.
Timeline
2022
IBM transferred approximately $16 billion of U.S. defined benefit pension obligations to Prudential and MetLife, covering about 100,000 participants and beneficiaries. It was one of the largest pension risk transfers ever completed.
2024
IBM completed a further $6 billion pension risk transfer to Prudential, shifting payment responsibility for roughly 32,000 retirees and beneficiaries.
What this means for you
IBM retirees covered by these transfers receive the same benefit amount as before, paid by the insurer rather than the IBM plan. The key change is the backstop: PBGC insurance no longer applies to transferred benefits, and state insurance guaranty associations do. Our guide to pension risk transfers covers exactly what changes and what does not.
IBM's deals illustrate how mainstream risk transfer has become for even the strongest balance sheets. If you received an annuity certificate from Prudential or MetLife, that document, not the old plan booklet, now defines your benefit's terms.
If you are a participant and receive a new offer letter, the analysis is the same as for any buyout: request the calculation worksheet, run the numbers in our calculator, and work through the 12 questions before the deadline. Declining always leaves your benefit in place.
